This past year, hydrogen seemingly emerged from nowhere to dominate energy transition agendas. Private sector investments, partnerships, joint ventures, and project announcements have become near-daily occurrences, and governments across the globe appear to be competing with each other to lay claim to the most ambitious national hydrogen strategy. This could very well be the early days of the “hydrogen decade”.

Hydrogen’s rise to prominence is being driven primarily by the improved economics of production via electrolysis – a process that requires only electricity and water as inputs – powered by renewable energy (“green” hydrogen). As renewable energy prices have fallen dramatically in the past decade, the cost of producing green hydrogen has similarly plummeted. The result is a zero-carbon fuel source that can replace fossil fuels in energy-intensive economic sectors. From the transport sector, to the gas grid, to industrial heating, and mining operations, hydrogen can be used in place of carbon-heavy fuels to reduce and eliminate emissions.
