More and more Dutch entrepreneurs want to replace their CO2-emitting fleets with electric trucks and delivery vans (EVs). Charging them all would require more power than the electricity grid can currently handle. A logical solution is to directly charge the fleet with solar panels on their own roofs. What is needed to make that business case work for entrepreneurs?

The Solarplaza Summit Electric Vehicles The Netherlands seeks to answer that question and will unite a mixed crowd of solar PV and e-mobility professionals to provide essential insights into the interaction of EVs, batteries, charging infrastructure, solar energy, and the grid. Because one thing is clear: solar energy is the ideal and most cost-competitive candidate to fuel green, electric mobility and will play a pivotal role in supplying and optimizing the EV energy system.

At this point, the Netherlands already has one of the densest charging networks in the world. In 2021, there were almost 300,000 charging stations operating in the country. The EV numbers also don’t lie. By July 31 this year, there were already over 450,000 electric passenger cars driving around the Netherlands, while one out of six buses in public transport is now zero-emission. However, the number of electric commercial vehicles still lags behind. There are now 11,659 electric vans and 293 electric trucks, translating to respectively 0.10 and 0.18 percent of the total amount of these commercial vehicles. Boosting these numbers is critical, as EV batteries will play a pivotal role in creating more flexibility in power supply and demand. Grid operators are already heavily investing in research regarding smart charging and vehicle-to grid potential as part of the solution to the grid congestion issues that are beginning to plague the build-out of intermittent renewable energy sources.
