Music and mysticism, rhythms for tolerance and peace”

International conference, September 14, 15 and 16, 2023 in Essaouira

“Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre » (Psalm 81: 1 and 81:2, Bible NIV)

Located at the confluence of ethnic groups, races and protean confessions, music offers its disciples horizons where art, sacredness and spirituality overlap. Liturgical or Gregorian chants, psalmodies and psalms manifest a spiritual rhythm that introduces faithful individuals to a transcendental world beyond all dogmatism. Music then becomes an uplifting ritual that celebrates the divine, ‘learns’ its secret and transcends an ethnic reality with complex, if not, bellicose allures. In this sense, features such as sounds, rhythms, voices, music and dances come to intercede with peace, love for and conciliation with others. Such features have become inescapable channels of mediation, capable of transmitting universal ideals and communicating with natural forces for some people or with the creator for others. From liturgical to devotional music, passing through sacred or quite simply spiritual music, in the form of rhythms, songs or dances, religious music, compared to worldy music, has the particularity of being imbued with energy, linked to rituals, and devoted to a singular purpose: the spiritual and the mystical.

In view of the confessional conflicts from which humanity suffers and given an international geopolitical context that is replete with political, ethnic and religious conflicts; music manages to open up doors for sublimating man’s experience and restoring his sensitivity. This saving union of the spiritual and the artistic is part of the quest for an absolute: where the human work, whatever its nature (music, songs, dances etc.), does not yield to the divine work. The artistic, getting close in fine, is also coming up to the divine through human creation, which destroys the borders between and among people, and this celestial inherent to any creative soul.

Faithful to its tradition, the association Roots for Art and Culture, in partnership with Cadi Ayyad University and the Higher School of Technology – Essaouira, is organizing the 4th edition of International Meetings of Sufi Brotherhoods and Trace Music in Essaouira, Morocco. On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, the organizers have chosen as a theme for this edition: Music and Mysticism, Rhythms for Tolerance and Peace.
