Mediterranean Life Sciences Union (MEDLIFE) December 07, 2026 - Naples, Italy

Mediterranean Life Sciences Union (MedLIFE) aims to create a unique federation that brings together and represents the Mediterranean life sciences communities. Researchers from all fields of life sciences, both in the Mediterranean area and throughout the world, will be invited to join MedLIFE.


MedLIFE intends to develop several initiatives that enable life scientists to perform transdisciplinary research with stakeholders. This can contribute to theory development since integrating academic and experiential knowledge from practice actors is considered vital to transforming towards sustainability. The new union is also hoped to provide opportunities for Mediterranean life scientists to undertake interdisciplinary collaborative research. As a result, the foundation of this union will offer life sciences more influence in policy-making and in the implementation of solutions to the most critical socioeconomic and environmental concerns. MedLIFE will recognize the work of the most active life scientists with awards and medals.


The plan is to establish a large organization for the Mediterranean region that is more influential than any local life science society to foster fundamental and applied life sciences research that addresses critical societal and environmental issues and provides solutions for many global challenges posed by sustainable development. MedLIFE’s overarching vision is to contribute to realizing a sustainable future for humanity and the planet.


The creation of this union will give the life sciences more influence in policy-making and in the implementation of solutions to preserve the natural environment and develop more sustainable societies for the people in the Mediterranean region. In this context, MedLIFE will serve as a worldwide platform for scientists of all disciplines and countries to collaborate and communicate to promote multidisciplinary joint research, training, and education as well as advocate for information and resource access and sharing.

Biotechnology (Utilizing biological systems or derivatives to develop products and technologies for diverse industries like healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing).

Biochemistry (Chemical processes within living organisms, emphasizing molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways).

Bioinformatics & Biological Data Science (Utilizing biology, computer science, and statistics to analyze large-scale biological datasets, like genomic sequences and protein structures).

Biolinguistics (Studying genetics, neurobiology, and cognition's influence on language acquisition and evolution).

Biological & Biomedical Engineering (Applying engineering principles to innovate solutions in healthcare and medical technology).

Biological Oceanography (Studying marine life, ecosystems, and processes in oceans, including biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and climate change impacts).

Biomechanics (Exploring the mechanics of living organisms' movement and structure, applicable in sports science, rehabilitation, and biomechanical engineering).

Biophysics (Studying physical principles in biology including molecular interactions, cellular mechanics, and biomolecular structure).

Biosustainability (Advocating sustainable practices across agriculture, industry, and society to uphold biodiversity, ecosystem health, and human well-being).

Botany (Plants structure, function, classification, and ecological roles, with applications in agriculture, forestry, and conservation biology).

Cancer Biology & Oncology (Studying cancer cell biology, tumor development, and molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, with emphasis on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies).

Cell Biology (The structure, function, and behavior of cells, including cellular processes such as cell division, signaling, and organelle function).

Circular Bioeconomy (Encouraging sustainable resource management and recycling to create a circular economy, minimizing environmental impact while maximizing resource efficiency).

Ecology & Environmental Biology (Studying organism-environment interactions, emphasizing ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation, and human impacts on natural systems).

Endocrinology (Studying hormone and endocrine gland structure and function, exploring their regulatory roles in metabolic, growth, and reproductive processes).
