The focus of this workshop is to learn to create a positive classroom climate through class meetings and direct instruction in social and emotional learning that teachers reinforce and apply across learning environment.


Objectives

Participants will be able to:


    Learn the theory behind Positive Discipline

    Discover practical applications to use the theory to create optimal learning environment

    Understand how it is structured in classrooms and schools

    Gain practical skills to teach social and emotional learning

    Explore tools to solve behavior challenges with students


Outline

Session 1: Introduction to Positive Discipline


    Learn the theory behind Positive Discipline and how it can be used in the classroom and school-wide

    Understand the importance of creating routines and jobs in the classroom

    Explore different approaches to classroom discipline

    Experience interactions with adults from a child’s point of view

    Find out the teacher’s position in establishing a collaborative classroom culture

    Identify the importance of a long-term view toward discipline


Session 2: Emotional Regulation and Communication Skills


    Develop an understanding of the emotional regulation and communication skills necessary to have effective class meetings

    Recognize the parts of the brain involved in emotional regulation

    Create a tool kit for teaching communication skills to student

    Explore the mistaken goals of misbehavior and learn proactive and responsive strategies to deal with them

    Practice effective ways to give directions and problem solve with students


Session 3: Class Meetings


    See students running a class meeting

    Learn the components of successful class meetings

    Explore different ways of creating class meeting agendas

    Find out about additional classroom structures to build student independence in using the problem-solving process
