Language Mediation in Flux: Assessing the Impact of Generative AI on May 20-21, 2025 in Madrid, Spain

Comillas Pontifical University is excited to host the 2025 CIUTI conference in Madrid, Spain. CIUTI is the leading global association of universities and scholars in Translation and Interpreting (T&I) studies.

The 2025 conference theme “Language Mediation in Flux” invites scholars, translators, and interpreters to explore the ongoing and profound impacts of generative AI and language technologies on the field. When ChatGPT launched in 2022, many pundits decried the “death of the college essay” and spoke of seismic changes to the translation industry. However, some translators and language service providers are using these new technologies to improve access to translation and facilitate the translation of more languages, such as the program No Language Left Behind (NLLB Team et al., 2022).

Can AI-enhanced language mediation services bridge the gap between the demand for immediate, widespread information dissemination and the need for accurate, culturally aware translations? In what ways do AI-assisted translation tools transform accessibility and inclusivity for underrepresented languages, and what are the ethical considerations in ensuring accuracy and cultural sensitivity? How can the integration of AI in language mediation practices and pedagogies redefine the roles of translators and interpreters, and what new challenges and opportunities does this present?

Clearly, these are just a few of the inquiries into the unfolding impacts of generative AI on translation and interpretation. Therefore, we are excited to welcome to CIUTI 2025 a multitude of perspectives and interdisciplinary dialogues to envision the future of the fields. Overall, the conference aims to dissect and discuss the evolving landscape of translation and interpreting, highlighting the integration of artificial intelligence in our practices and pedagogies.

Conference Themes

Proposals are invited on various topics related to translation, interpretation and related fields. We are particularly interested in contributions that address the following themes:

1. Evaluation of AI Models and Engines in T&I: Research and insights into how the latest AI technologies may be reshaping translation and interpreting processes and efficacy. For example, we encourage submissions that critically evaluate the “success” of AI in translation tasks, particularly in light of Popel et al.'s (2020) study, which suggested that machine models could “significantly outperform” professional (human?) translators.

2. New Professional Profiles for T&I Graduates: Exploring the evolving career paths and skill sets required in the era of Generative AI.

3. Impact on T&I Training and Language Education: Assessing how AI technologies are transforming traditional teaching methodologies and learning outcomes.

4. Continuing Education and Professional Retraining: Strategies for keeping current practitioners at the forefront of technological advancements.

5. Ethical Dimensions of AI in T&I: Delving into the implications of AI on copyright, sustainability, regulation, and the potential for misuse. We also invite contributions that build on the theoretical frameworks proposed by Gammelgaard et al. (2023) for decolonizing language resources in the human-machine era.
