Botanical Survey of India (BSI) is the apex research organisation under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India, with the mandate of carrying out taxonomic/floristic studies of Indian flora, collection & documentation of traditional knowledge associated with plants and carrying out ex-situ conservation of wild plant resources of the country. Established on 13th February 1890 under the Directorship of Sir George King, and latter reorganized in 1954 (after independence), under the leadership of Dr. E.K. Janaki Ammal; BSI has broadened its mandate in many folds over the years. Presently, Scientists of BSI are working on biosystematics research, taxonomic revisionary and floristic studies, documentation, databasing of National Botanical collection; digitization of herbarium specimens, molecular taxonomy of specialized groups of plants, threat assessment of plants, Mushrooms, Phycology, advisory services, and Capacity Building Training programs, etc. to meet the current aspirations of the country. Presently, the Botanical Survey of India is spread over 11 Regional Centres and 5 units, 9 Botanical Gardens, with its headquarters at Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Botanical Survey of India is organizing the 3rd International Symposium to celebrate its 136th Foundation Day. This Symposium aims to serve as a platform for experts and scholars from all across the world to exchange ideas, the latest research findings, emerging trends and challenges in the field of plant taxonomic research; enabling researchers to disseminate their findings to a global audience, to foster collaboration between institutions, research centres, and promoting a culture of international cooperation to meet the global challenges we are facing today.



After the successful conduction of the first two International symposiums, taking the legacy forward, the Botanical Survey of India is organizing the third edition in 2025 at Kolkata. BSI-ISPTEBG 2025 aims to provide an international forum for researchers, policy makers, and industry practitioners to share their original research results & practical experiences on Plant taxonomy and floristic research, ethnobotanical study and conservation techniques. The topics from different perspectives, includes - endemic species, threat assessment, botanic gardens, revisionary studies, access to benefit sharing, People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR), sustainable utilization etc. The symposium will have a separate session on sharing India’s experience on revision / updating of National Biodiversity Strategies and action plan in alignment with the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, 2022. The symposium will also include a keynote address, and lead lecture from eminent invitees and is scheduled to run in 4-5 parallel sessions. There will be an exhibition on the collection of ethno-botanic artefacts and different publications from BSI and other publishers.
