CMC’s uniqueness lies in its ability to serve the people in India as a multidisciplinary tertiary care health center with 3000 beds as well as deliver cost effective primary care to the communities locally. The first allogeneic HSCT in CMC, Vellore was performed in the year 1986. The service was initiated by the tireless efforts of Padma Shri Dr. Mammen Chandy and his team. From the year 1986 to 2021, the Department of Hematology has performed 2,782Allogeneic (Related – 2,133, MUD-289, Haplo-360) and 991Autologus Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.The College of Nursing, as an integral part of CMC plays a vital role in providing high quality of education and training to prepare nurses with sound knowledge and clinical competence, who can effectively function in various health care settings adhering to ethical principles.

Explosion of knowledge as evidence, technological advances, and emphasis on quality patient outcomes necessitate the need to keep abreast of the rapid changes in the delivery of health care. HSCT has evolved into a definite and successful treatment strategy for patients with several Hematological disorders. Over the last 2 decades, HSCT has seen rapid expansion as a treatment modality and constant evolution in its technology. However, the post-transplantation period poses a challenge due to profound immunodeficiency. Nurses play a pivotal role within the multidisciplinary team caring for patients and their families undergoing this intense treatment. Standard operating procedures and nursing care protocols have been formulated and implemented to ensure safe and quality patient care. This conference will be an arena for nurses to learn the global nursing perspectives on HSCT and keep their knowledge abreast to provide the highest standard of care.

In this conference we intend to encourage every participant to deliberate on improving quality of care for patients undergoing HSCT with the following objectives:

• Acquire in-depth knowledge regarding HSCT

• Recognize the evolving trends and challenges in HSCT

• Explore the global nursing care perspectives pertaining to HSCT

• Gain insight in the innovative evidence based practices in the transplant unit

• Provide high quality nursing care for patients undergoing HSCT

Christian Medical College, Vellore opened India’s first College of Nursing which started the Graduate Nursing Course in 1946. However, the Lower Grade Nursing Course for girls began in 1909. The first batch of 15 girls graduated from the then School of Nursing. In 1932, the programme evolved into a diploma in Nursing and offered India’s first degree course in 1946, and post-graduate courses and doctoral programmes in 1969 and 1994, respectively The College creates a nurturing environment and, to this end, along with academic and clinical excellence, the spiritual development of students is emphasized through retreats, Bible classes and community worship on Sundays so that the institution’s motto is internalized.
