International Complutense Congress on East Asia: Daily life in Asia on October 16-20, 2023 in Madrid, Spain

3rd International Complutense Congress on East Asia: Daily life in Asia

Complutense University of Madrid. October, 16th-20th, 2023.

In the different Asian cultures there are sayings such as 物の哀れ (mono no aware, Japan) or 及时行乐 (Jí shí xíng lè, China), alluding to ideas understood by Greco-Latin cultures as pathos, carpe diem, lacrimae rerum, collige virgo roses... To sum up, they are talking about a tribute to life, to enjoy the moment, to appreciate the ephemeral. However, the golden ceilings supported on jasper should not cloud our view, since little everyday things are our most precious asset. Those smells, those nostalgic flavors and customs that shape our vital experience that, far from despising them, we must embrace strongly so to avoid those precious fleeting moments passing by. The day-to-day transforms the extraordinary into possible, that is why we want to dedicate our III East Asia International Congress to those customary experiences, the daily, the habits and, in summary, to the day-to-day life in Asia. Whether it be within the material or the immaterial culture, we want to contemplate those objects, actions, processes, traditions, rites, and ceremonies that Asian societies perform on a daily basis, since only by appreciating each one of the parts will we be able to understand the whole thing.

Thus, we open this Call for Contributions, as always, making a call to all Asian areas and opened to all research approaches, as long as they involve a hint of daily life. The congress will be held at the Complutense University of Madrid during the week of October 16th to 20th, 2023, and participation can be both in-site and virtual, in order to boost the exchange with colleagues who cannot travel to Madrid, thus expanding our geographical limits.

In order to provide the Scientific Committee with accurate data when evaluating the proposals’ adequacy to the congress’ topic and standards, It is compulsory to submit a draft of the proposal (5 pages, bibliography included). Once the congress is over, participants will be able to modify the draft on demand, in order to have it published in the Journal of the East Asian Studies Area (REAO).
