In-Line Inspection and Inspection of Challenging Pipelines on March 10-13, 2026 in Amsterdam, Netherlands

In-Line Inspection and Inspection of Challenging Pipelines March 10, 2026 - Amsterdam, Netherlands

Modern pipeline networks face increasing demands for safety, uptime and regulatory scrutiny, while many assets are hard to inspect due to complex designs, limited piggability and new media such as hydrogen. At the same time, operators are expected to demonstrate a clear, data-driven integrity strategy across both traditional and challenging pipelines.

This course on In-Line Inspection and Inspection of Challenging Pipelines provides an in-depth, practical introduction to pipeline inspection and integrity. You will learn how in-line inspection fits into overall maintenance strategies, understand typical flaws and anomalies, and explore UT and electromagnetic inspection technologies, internal and external inspection tools, procedures, verification and reporting. Special attention is given to defect assessment and integrity requirements for hydrogen pipelines.

Led by renowned experts Dr. Michael Beller and Dr.-Ing. Konrad Reber, the training combines detailed technical content, real case examples and interactive discussions to help you plan, execute and interpret inspection campaigns with confidence. Join the course in Amsterdam and strengthen your pipeline integrity program with proven best practices.

Pipeline Integrity Foundations (basics + PIM context)

Introduction, history, purpose of inspection, pipeline integrity management, asset types (upstream/midstream/downstream, onshore/offshore, materials, risers).

Defects & Threats

Overview of threats, manufacturing vs. operational defects, geometric anomalies, metal loss (corrosion/gouging), linear defects (cracks), offshore specifics, flexible/cladded/lined pipes.

Future Fuels Track (H₂ / CO₂ / NH₃ specifics)

“Future fuels” introduction, material considerations, expected defect types, special inspection and integrity requirements (including “Hydrogen insight” elements across the program).

Inspection Technologies Track (UT + electromagnetic methods + others)

UT principles (wall thickness, crack detection), EMAT, new UT trends (phased array, full matrix capture).

Electromagnetic: MFL (axial/transverse), sizing/grading, eddy current, PEC, remote field, far-field methods, plus other options (visual, profiling, radiography).

ILI Tools Track (internal tools for conventional and challenging/“unpiggable” lines)

Role of ILI, conventional vs. challenging pipelines, access/negotiability/propulsion, cleaning pigs, geometry tools, metal loss tools (MFL/UT), crack tools (UT/EMAT), combo/multi-tech tools, free-swimming, tethered, crawlers/robotics, data quality factors, multiple datasets.

Operations & Procedures Track

Planning (technical questionnaire), pipeline preparation, cleaning, executing the inspection, batching/tracking/safety, launching/receiving, data checks, low-pressure/low-flow, high temperature, geometric constraints, challenging launches & tasks + “example solutions.”

Verification & External Inspection Track

Verification of internal inspection (digs, unity plots, comparison to destructive testing, handling discrepancies, assessing tool accuracy).

External operations: access to the pipeline (offshore), deployment (manual/remote/autonomous), dead zones/coverage, subsea preparation.

Reporting, Data Quality & Data Management Track

How results are presented, preparing assessments, offline analysis workflow, sample report, feature location/positioning, data quality evaluation, POF standard for ILI reporting, data management & big data.

Defect Assessment & Integrity Management Track

Metal loss assessment (standard vs. special), MAOP, B31G, RSTRENG, DNV RP-F101, run comparisons, corrosion growth, crack assessment (incl. hydrogen-induced), deterministic vs. probabilistic approaches (uncertainty).

Workshops / Practical Exercises + 1:1 Consulting

Exercises: setting up an inspection program, external inspection methods, assessing a sample defect + 1:1 consulting session with the trainers (and a drinks reception).
