Join us for the BIOMEDICAL DATA SCIENCE Summer School & Conference – two interconnected events where students receive intensive training in health data science (July 28 – August 5), followed by a scientific conference to share cutting-edge work in data-intensive biological and medical research (August 6 - 8).

SUMMER SCHOOL

How can networks help us identify critical relationships in biomedical systems? How can we uncover hidden connections between genes and predict disease pathways? How can visualizing medical data improve diagnostics and treatment outcomes? How can machine learning and deep learning models transform the analysis of complex medical data?

If you're eager to explore these questions, join us at the Biomedical Data Science Summer School! This program equips participants with the theoretical foundation and practical skills to apply network science, data visualization, and machine learning to real-world biomedical challenges.

 

The curriculum focuses on four key areas:

 

  • Biomedical Network Science

Learn how networks can model relationships between genes, proteins, diseases, and patient data to uncover patterns and predict interactions.

 

  • Medical Data Visualization

Explore practical methods for creating clear, interactive visualizations of complex medical datasets, improving interpretability and decision-making.

 

  • Machine Learning on Tabular Medical Data

Apply machine learning techniques to structured datasets, such as electronic health records, to predict outcomes and identify risk factors.

 

  • Deep Learning on Unstructured Medical Data

Gain hands-on experience with deep learning models to analyze unstructured data, including medical images, text, and genomic sequences.

 

GROUP PROJECTS

Participants will work in teams on data-driven projects, applying what they learn in the courses. Mentors will provide guidance, and teams will present their results to an expert jury at the end of the program. Dedicated time is set aside for project work and presentations, ensuring a practical and engaging learning experience.

 

CREDITS INFO

Participants who successfully complete the summer school will be awarded 4 ECTS. A certificate of completion will be provided by Semmelweis University, which can facilitate credit transfer to your home institution.

 

CONFERENCE

The conference welcomes papers addressing data-intensive biological and medical research challenges, with a focus on developing novel methodologies to advance biomedical science discovery, including but not limited to:

Data-driven solutions and approaches are receiving growing attention in biomedical and health science research. The accumulating large amount and diverse data require complex, interdisciplinary analysis. Innovative Data-Driven Approaches in Healthcare The aim of the Institute of Biostatistics and Network Sciences is to analyze the large amount of biomedical and health data gathered in healthcare institutions and systems, as well as through the Institute’s own data collection campaigns. We bring advanced mathematical and computational methodologies alongside traditional statistical analyses to help answer biomedical research questions, with a particular focus on computer vision, natural language processing, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and network science. Interdisciplinary Collaboration for Biomedical Research Our Institute seeks to play an active role in promoting interdisciplinary cooperation. Our goal is to support the rapid and effective translation of innovative solutions shared by doctors, health professionals, biostatisticians, data and network scientists into healthcare practice. An important objective of our institute is to emphasize in its portfolio its own applied data science and network science research topics in addition to its supporting role. Making it possible for our young researchers to obtain a doctoral degree and our senior researchers to compete successfully in national and international scientific grant applications. Health Data Science Programs in English Recognizing the growing demand for data-intensive approaches in biomedical science, our Institute aims to launch new programs in the field of health data science: new BSc and MSc programs in clinical and biomedical data science in English. In the proposed programs, students will not only learn the statistical, mathematical, and computational methodologies necessary for practicing data science, but also the biomedical and health science concepts and processes required for working collaboratively with medical doctors and health science professionals.
